How we measure

How we measure

Every test runs against Cloudflare's network from the data centre nearest to you. Here is exactly what each number means.

Latency and jitter

After a few warm-up messages, we send 50 small, numbered messages, 40 ms apart, and time each round trip. Ping is the average of the fastest fifth, your connection's real idle latency without Wi‑Fi or phone power-saving hiccups. Jitter is the average change between consecutive results.

Packet loss

Browsers can't send raw network packets, so we count messages that never return, or return after 0.8 seconds, too late to be useful for a call or a game.

Download and upload

Several parallel streams of random, uncompressible data for 8 seconds each way. The first 1.5 seconds is ignored so connection ramp-up doesn't understate your speed.

Stress test

Download and upload run at full speed together for 20 seconds while latency is probed every 250 ms. That reveals bufferbloat, loss under load and how steady the line is.
