Common questions

What do ping, jitter and packet loss mean?

Ping is the time for a message to reach the server and come back; lower feels snappier. Jitter is how much ping varies; high jitter makes calls choppy. Packet loss is data that never arrives or arrives too late. How we measure

Why is my result lower than the speed my plan promises?

Plans quote the maximum to your router. Wi‑Fi distance, walls, older devices, other people using the connection and busy evening hours all reduce what a single device sees. For the truest figure, test on a cable-connected computer with nothing else running.

Why is my ping different from other speed tests?

Ping depends on how far away the test server is. Some speed tests use servers inside your internet provider's own network in your city, which gives a lower number. We always test against Cloudflare's nearest data centre (shown under the dial), which reflects how quickly you reach real websites and apps. If that's in a different city, ping will be a few milliseconds higher.

What's a good ping for gaming and video calls?

Under 40 ms feels instant and suits competitive gaming. Up to about 100 ms is fine for calls and casual play. Jitter under 10 ms and packet loss under 1% matter as much as ping itself.

Is 4G or 5G faster where I live?

Use the 4G / 5G coverage map and filter by network type. It shows the fastest operator in each area from real tests on this site, so it gets more accurate as more people in your area take part.

What is bufferbloat, and how do I fix it?

Bufferbloat is the delay that builds up when your connection is busy, for example during a large download, causing lag on calls and games. Many routers can fix it with a setting called Smart Queue Management (SQM) or QoS.

What data do you keep about me?

If you choose to add your result to the map, we store the speeds, your operator's name and an approximate city-level location provided by Cloudflare. We never store your IP address. See our privacy notice.

How much data does a test use?

It depends on your speed: the test runs for a fixed time, so faster connections transfer more. On mobile data, a quick test on a 50 Mbps connection uses roughly 60 MB; the stress test uses several times more.
